When you are recovering from an injury or surgery, you may want to get back to your normal routine as soon as possible. But your body may not be ready and trying to resume normal activities right away can put a lot of strain on injuries that are trying to heal. Rehabilitation allows you to regain movement and normal function gradually with the help of a Physical or Occupational Therapist. This way you can retrain your body to move in ways that do not put unnecessary strain on your injuries. This may speed up the healing process and prevent sustaining any new injuries while your body is weakened.

What To Expect During Your Visit

Your first visit will typically begin with you filling out an intake form, providing a medical history and detailing the condition you are seeking treatment for. A Physical or Occupational Therapist can then perform a musculoskeletal examination. Through looking at your injury and medical history they will begin to work with you to develop a plan for treating your injury.

The type of treatment will depend upon your injury and unique needs. It may include strength building exercises, increasing your range of motion, and learning to properly move muscles without overworking them. You may be prescribed a treatment of acupuncture to help with pain and healing.

If you are working with an Occupational therapist, your goal may be to return to work and prevent sustaining any future work-related injuries. Your Occupational therapist will then go over the range of activities performed in your job to better understand the cause of the injury and how to prevent future ones. They will also help you develop better skills and relearn movements for daily life.

They may also make recommendations about modifications in your job to prevent future injuries. They will work with you to help educate you about how the injury was sustained and how to quickly get better.

What Rehabilitation Can Treat

Rehabilitation can help you recover from an injury that may have been sustained on the job, in your daily life, while playing sports, or due to an underlying condition. Rehabilitation can help you if you are recovering from surgery, if you are taking time off to heal from a work-related injury, or for any injury that limits your ability to perform daily tasks and activities.
